Type faster on your cell phone with Swype
By cesarmartins
Over the past 10 years cell phones have become a powerful, and essential tool for everyday tasks. We started using it for several different types of communication, including video calling. Even though, text messaging is still the most used overall. Typing on cell phones has never been treated by most of people as a comfortable, and natural task like typing on our desktop keyboards, until an amazing application for touchscreen devices come out.
What is Swype?
Swype is an input method developed for touchscreen smartphones to allow users write by sliding a finger on the screen, making you write quite faster than tapping letter per letter.
Swype has also a built-in prediction system, that predicts every world you intend to write basing on the movement you did previously, and input it for you automatically.
Spaces are inserted after every world by default, and corrections can be applied after two taps on the word, and selecting one from the list.
Last but not least, Swype does also learn new words, if you type a word letter per letter followed by space, Swype will add it to its database, and will eventually use for further predictions.
Its development pulled it off becoming typing on touchpad devices a very joyfull, and handy task.
Swype for tablets
The major issue of typing on tablets is due to their big screens, leading you to apply much effort to reach every single letter. Hopefully, Swype team has developed a special build for tablets as well, and it's pretty awesome! The aspects that stand out on this build, are:
- Keyboard can be moved to the right or left side, as it fits better for you.
- Keyboard is small, so you can reach letters easily with no much effort. Getting rid of the big screen downside for typing.
How to use Swype?
Is it sounding odd, and complicated to you? What about using your only thumb to write on your cell phone while you walk on the street, and write quite fast? This is what I do on a daily basis, and Swype is my secret.
Swyping consists in tracing the path from letter to letter, even though, you don't need to worry about doing the whole thing perfectly, because the Swype built-in prediction system will mostly guess what you will be trying to say, and will insert the word right away for you.
How to insert double letters?
Swype will mostly figure out when you try to input a double letter by default, but you can become things easier by simply scribing or looping on the key.
How to capitalize letters?
Capitalizing is quite simple, you just need to tap, and hold a letter, plus slide off the keyboard, and slide back to the next key. Easy peasy!
How to insert punctuation?
Apart from pressing, and holding every single letter, you can also Swype periods, commas, question marks, and quotation marks by sliding your finger from these keys to the space bar.
How to Swype apostrophes?
When you Swype words containing apostrophes, they will be inserted automatically by default, the same rule applies to the other accents. But you can avoid mistaken predictions by sliding the finger to the apostrophe while drawing the word.
How to correct words?
Corrections require a double tap on the word plus choosing another word from the list. If you can't find it, you can just type it letter per letter inserting a space at the end to let Swype save the new word for you.

@alocsin
I'd say it's the way to slide through! Best wishes!
@Dumbledore
I strongly suggest you to do so, mate. At the very beginning, I was in the same situation as you, and I once gave up. But it's just a matter of time, and practice after you learn all shortcuts. Today, I'd rather use my phone instead of my desktop computer to chat.
Thank you all for stopping by, and dropping a line!
